ATHENS - The Athens area loses a legendary figure. Author and naturalist Fred Birchmore died Sunday at the age of 100.

Birchmore was known for cycling around the globe and walking down the Washington Monument's steps on his hands.

He also donated acres of land to Memorial Park and led his church choir for years.
